Walter
Parker VC Blue Plaque
Walter Richard Parker was the husband of Pauline's great great aunt. Most
of his adult life was spent in Stapleford, near Nottingham, where there
is a memorial square named after him. However, he was born in Grantham,
and on Armistice Day 2011 a blue plaque, provided by the Grantham Civic
Society, was unveiled in his honour.
The inscription reads: "Walter Parker was born
near here at 5 Agnes Street. During the Gallipoli Campaign he was
awarded the Victoria Cross. In charge of a party of stretcher bearers
he braved heavy machine-gun fire, and despite being seriously injured,
helped save his wounded comrades."
