Ancaster
Valley
A bright spring day in the Ancaster Valley nature reserve.
This dry
valley is thought to have been created by the melting of glaciers on
higher
ground to the south. Its limestone grassland, scrub and woodland
provides a rich habitat for flowers, birds and insects.
The nearby village of Ancaster sits on the Roman road known as Ermine
Street. The Romans had a settlement there, and it has been suggested
that they used the valley for chariot racing.
