While the plague was rampant, normal church services and funerals were suspended, and families were
expected to bury their dead away from the village centre. Consequently there are now several small
burial plots dotted around the village margins.
This one is known as the Riley Graves, after the family who owned the land at the time. However, the
burials are of the father and six children of the Hancock family, who all died within eight days in
August 1666.
