Oakwell Hall (1)

Oakwell Hall in Birstall was built for John Batt in 1583. His family sold it in the early 18th century, and it had a variety of owners and tenants before being given to Batley Corporation in 1929. Since then it has been a museum, and it is now run by Kirklees Council, with the rooms presented as they might have looked in the 1690s.

The hall is surrounded by parkland with gardens, a nature trail and other paths. Much of this has been reclaimed from the spoil heaps of Gomersal Colliery, but unfortunately modern life still intrudes in the form of constant traffic noise from the nearby M62 motorway.
