Wentworth Castle (1)
Wentworth Castle, near Barnsley, takes its name from the Wentworth family, Earls of Strafford. William, the 2nd Earl, died in 1695. He had no children and his nephew Thomas had hoped to inherit his wealth, including the large estate of Wentworth Woodhouse, but instead it went to William's wife's nephew.
In retaliation Thomas bought the nearby Stainborough House and had it rebuilt and renamed as Wentworth Castle, the building we see today. This picture is of the south front.
